Hairy Vetch

Description:
A climbing vine with spreading hairs on stem and long-stalked, 1-sided clusters of many violet and white pea flowers.
Flowers:
About 5/8" long.
Leaves:
Pinnately compound, with 10-20 leaflets, each 1/2-1" long; tendrils at end of each leaf.
Fruit:
Several-seeded pod.
Height:
Vine; to 3' long.
Flowering:
May- October.
Habitat:
Fields and thickets.
Comments:
Introduced from Europe, Hairy Vetch is widely cultivated for fodder and often escapes from cultivation. it differs from the similar Cow Vetch (V.cracca) in the hairiness of its stem and in its larger flowers.
