Celandine

Description:
Deep yellow flowers in small loose clusters; plant has saffron-colored sap.
Flowers:
5/8" wide; sepals 2, dropping off as flowers open; petals 4, more in double-flowered forms.
Leaves:
4-8" long, alternate, light green, divided into several intricately lobed segments.
Fruit:
Smooth slender capsule.
Height:
1-2'.
Flowering:
April-August.
Habitat:
Moist soil of roadsides, woodland edges, and around dwellings.
Comments:
This European introduction is attractive but aggressive and poisonous to chickens. Since its sap resembles bile, it was at one time used for removing warts and freckles. The plant called Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria), is similar but not closely related.
