Canadian Dwarf Cinquefoil

Description:
A low spreading plant bearing silvery downy stem and 1 yellow flower on each long stalk rising from axils of palmately compound leaves with 5 leaflets.
Flowers:
1/2-5/8" wide; sepals and petals 5 each; stamens and pistils numerous; first flower rising from axil of first leaf.
Leaves:
Leaflets to 1 1/2" long, toothed at tip, untoothed below middle.
Fruit:
Dry, seed-like.
Height:
2- 6"; stems prostrate after flowering.
Flowering:
March-June.
Habitat:
Dry open soil.
Comments:
This species is very similar to Common Cinquefoil (P.simplex), but the latter has larger leaflets to 2 1/2" long, and the first flower rises from the axil of the second leaf; it is found throughout our area, except the Prairie Provinces and the Dakotas. Both species are indicators of impoverised soil.
