Part of the Sudbury
Aqueduct, Echo Bridge was the second largest, masonry stone arched bridge
in the nation when first built in 1875, and remains so today. The bridge's
arches are constructed of granite with the central arch spanning 130 feet
and rising 60 feet above the river. There are seven arches in total. The
top portion of the bridge which carries the aqueduct is of brick and is
capped with a cast iron railed promenade to allow pedestrians to cross
from side to side, and can be accessed from Ellis Street by a substantial
flight of wooden stairs. The bridge received its name from its tremendous
acoustic qualities and the echo platform constructed under the main arch
on the easterly side of the river.
