Lake Chub

Description
To 7". Elongate, somewhat rounded; bluish-gray to dark greenish above; with midlateral, lead-colored stripe; faded in older fish; silvery-white below; breeding males bright reddish orange. Snout bluntly rounded; mouth extends to front of eye; eye equal to snout length; barbel present near corner of jay. Dorsal fin with 8 rays, origin just porsterior to pelvic fin insertion; caudal fin moderately forked. Lateral line complete, 56-69 scales.
Habitat
Clear to turbid rivers, creeks, and lakes over sand and gavel.

Lake Chubs, which occasionally reach 9", are used for bait in some areas. Their abundance suggests they may be an important forage fish.
