Hatch Shell |

Description
|
The current Hatch Shell is actually the third outdoor
band shell. Because of the awful acoustics emanating from the first wooden
version, the designers of the second, shell were determined to remedy
the sound problem. The second, a steel roof, radiated superior sound,
along with stifling heat that roasted the musicians and conductor. Few
acoustical complaints result from the third roof, a combination of terrazzo, marble, teak, and
concrete. Named after Edward Hatch where Free Esplanade concerts and the famous 4th of July
fireworks are held
